Day Twenty Six
I spent the day with 43 school kids at the Cinemagic Festival in Yorkgate. In the afternoon we watched Michael Moore’s film ‘Sicko’ which investigates the American Health System. I’m the first to be cynical about his ability to edit in order to promote his own agenda, but he presents a very powerful inditement against his homeland.
We returned to school, genuinely shocked by what we had seen and thankful for the NHS. Apparently each of Annie’s inhalers would cost me $125. I probably wouldn’t get health insurance for myself as I ill as a teenager with a lung infection. Rick’s already had an ECG for eating a kebab, so he’s screwed.
Tonight I’m thankful if someone I love needs emergency treatment in the middle of the night, that I live in the UK. I do not have the added stresses of how I’m going pay for their treatment.
Too many sad stories in that movie today, I hope its not true. I know there is a spate of New York love in blog land, but America is seriously screwed.
Day Two
Today my dad bought me lunch in Deanes at Banbridge. This time last week he was in the Royal Victoria Hospital, making me silently fear he wouldn’t need a stocking this Christmas. He’s a fighter, he loves his food and today’s ‘All Day Breakfast’ was a great way to celebrate his return to form. Just don’t tell his consultant.
